FAQ

What is Byline?

We are an online editorial that covers culture, life, romance, style, internet behavior, and our very own New York City. Our regularly-occurring columns and one-off pieces reflect a monthly theme. We felt there was a need for a place to have more fun with writing while making friends in the process. Our goal is to champion the writer and their unique voice, to provide them with an audience, and to introduce readers to new ideas.

We are currently a non-funded, for-fun project. We do not generate revenue at this time. We are built and powered by our community, and we are grateful to those who chose to be part of Byline’s early days.

How do I read Byline?

We offer new content every day-ish on our website, and we send a free weekly newsletter. Subscribe here. We do not currently offer a paid-subscription tier of our newsletter, as we are early in our process, but we will soon.

Does Byline pay writers?

Yes. Thanks to Urban Outfitters and Dickies, we reached our goal of being able to pay all Byline contributors as of our September issue.

We began as a bootstrapped, for-fun project. We were built and powered by our community, and we are grateful to those who chose to be part of Byline’s early days. All early contributors to Byline agreed to contribute on an unpaid basis. Our plan was always to pay our writers as soon as we are able to, and to pay them before ourselves. We have now reached that goal.

How do I write for Byline?

Send your pitch to pitch@bylinebyline.com. Let us know in your email if you are interested in writing a monthly column or a one-off piece. Please include 2-3 sentences on the topic you’d like to cover and 2-3 working titles for your column or article. We ask our writers to keep word count between 600-1,000 words.

Byline’s mission is to champion the individual voice. The same is true for our pitching process. Be yourself!

How can I support Byline?

In addition to paid partnerships, we are working on establishing paid subscriptions and merchandise. Follow along via social and our newsletter, and you’ll be kept in the loop as we progress.
